Expansion: Secondary School Campus, Pfäffikon ZH

Queen of Diamonds

The project concept is based on the 1969 campus master plan, and it adds a new third building to the square. This helps to spatially delimit the school playground. Additional tension comes from the placement of the entrances, transforming the open playground into a schoolyard. The dancing figure formally references the staggered arrangement of the existing buildings, and its small-scale appearance makes it fit into the neighborhood structure like a piece of the puzzle. At the same time, the shape stems from the aim to offer well-lit corner classrooms—an objective that makes sense for large classrooms with integrated group rooms. For maximum flexibility in view of future expansions, the figure consists of modular units. Each of these cluster-like modules has three classrooms and a central lounge. These constitute the basicunits to be combined additively, creating favorable conditions for future school expansions.
