Modernist Residential Building, Küsnacht

L‘Esprit Nouveau

In terms of its scale and materiality, the apartment building fits into the fabric of the town along Obere Heslibachstrasse. The relatively small eight-unit dwelling presents an opportunity to break with the image of a repetitive apartment building by adding a few variations to the façades, which convey the grace of an individual house. This strategy gives the buildinga good address and clear identity. In an homage to early modernism and Le Corbusier’s modernist architectural language, the building quotes some of the ideas formulated by Corbusier. The façades are tableaus composed of larger and smaller shapes that are in tension with each other, much like in a constructivist painting. The slightly projecting, colored balconiesand the entry area form the larger surfaces, while the room windows are smaller rectangles. The fully painted north façade serves as a contrast. The project was developed in accordance with special building codes and reviewed by an expert. The carefully designed architecture allowed for a significant increase in the floor area ratio.
