Built in 1908, the protected perimeter block fragment consists of a portico building on Bielstrasse, a massive schoolhouse, and—at an angle—a music room, as well as a gymnasium wing. The new gymnasium building replaces the existing gym and completes the campus in a distinctive manner. While the new structure’s roughcast backside develops seamlessly from the existing buildings, the generous openings on the south side reproduce the interior structure of the gyms. The new foyer links the new and the old by continuing the arch structures. The two gym spaces are stacked “downward”; they are one-way spanning structures and have a strong three-story spine with accessory rooms in the north. Prefabricated U-shaped concrete blocks bridge the large spans and simultaneously constitute the ceiling. Equipment installed in the ceiling elegantly disappears in the open joints. The supporting structure becomes the architecture.
